    La versión griega de la Biblia hebrea, la Septuaginta, fue la joya de la cultura judía helenística. Sin la famosa biblioteca de Alejandría, la institución cultural más importante fundada en la Antigüedad, no hubiera sido posible la traducción de una obra tan extensa y compleja como el Antiguo Testamento. La importancia histórica de la Septuaginta ha sido ingente, con unas consecuencias inmediatas para la expansión del cristianismo por la cuenca mediterránea; también por la inflexión que supuso para la realización de traducciones, a las lenguas más variadas, de las Escrituras.

    The Greek version of the Hebrew Bible, the Septuagint, was the jewel of the Hellenistic Jewish culture. Without the famous Library of Alexandria, the most important cultural institution founded in the Antiquity, it would not have been possible to translate a work of such an extension and complexity as the Old Testament. The historic relevance of the Septuagint has become enormous, with some immediate consequences for the expansion of Christianity all over the Mediterranean basin; also, as a turning point for the translation of the Holy Scriptures to manifold languages.
