Saint-Just remains in an internal tension: As an intervener of laws, in the shadow of which the tyranny advances, and, at the same time, as creator of institutions that generate freedom. Saint-Just opposed two replicas to the freezing of the people by Terror: Institutions and revolutionary heroism. Against the liberal and revisionist interpretations of the French Revolution and avoiding all praise of the conceptual character of the Thermidorian, the critical political philosophy of Michael Abensour makes Saint-Just an anti-Rousseau and an anti-Sade, to raise both the question of possibility of heroism in a modern antiheroic and prosaic society like that of human emancipation destined to remain a question.
