    Este artículo pretende contribuir a la reconstrucción de la historia del Santo Oficio napolitano examinando un brevísimo período de tiempo, el que transcurrió entre 1656 y 1659, que, sin embargo, resulta muy revelador respecto a los propósitos de la Congregazione del Sant’Uffizio en Nápoles durante la restauración del tribunal después de la peste de 1656.

    La delegación en el nuncio pontificio, así como las instrucciones que se le mandaron continuamente desde Roma, ponen de manifiesto la firme voluntad de afianzar la Inquisición romana frente a los obstáculos que pudieran oponer el virrey, el arzobispo y la oligarquía. Pero el reforzamiento del tribunal bajo la suprema autoridad de la Congregazione no se explicaría completamente sin vincularlo a quienes fueron su objetivo prioritario en aquellos años: las familias de judaizantes descubiertos en la capital y fuera de ella.

    This article aims to contribute to the reconstruction of the history of the Holy Office napolitano examining a very short period of time, that elapsed between 1656 and 1659, that, however, is very revealing about the purposes of the Congregazione del Sant’Uffizio in Naples during the restoration of the Inquisition Court after the plague of 1656.

    The delegation to the papal nuncio, as well as the instructions that were sent to him continuously from Rome, underscore the commitment to strengthen the Roman Inquisition against the obstacles that could oppose the viceroy, the archbishop and the oligarchy. But the strengthening of the Inquisition Court under the supreme authority of the Congregazione not explain fully without linking it to those who were its priority objective in those years: families of crypto-jews discovered in the capital and beyond.
