Widely distributed today, the French language dictionary has all the characteristics of a commonplace thing, and it seems to be used at school according to a purely technical logic. Nevertheless, its quasi-official function of linguistic normalization turns into a very specific object, a digest of trie history of language and a witness of its standardization. A quick historical investigation shows that the dictionary played a very important part in the development of school and of the teaching practices under the Third Republic, becoming a symbol of the primary culture. Its distribution and its use is now experiencing an obvious revival, but it is difficult to know yet if this hides a new form of linguistic fetichism or if it is really due to the development of a rational pedagogy of language appropriation.

Aujourd'hui largement diffusé, le dictionnaire de langue française a toutes les caractéristiques d'un objet banal, et son utilisation scolaire semble relever d'une logique purement technique. Pourtant, sa fonction quasi-officielle de normalisation linguistique en fait un objet bien particulier, concentré de l'histoire de la langue et témoin de sa standardisation. Comme le montre une rapide investigation historique, le dictionnaire a occupé une place de première importance dans le développement de l'Ecole et des pratiques scolaires sous la III ème République, devenant un véritable symbole de la culture primaire. Sa diffusion et son utilisation connaissent actuellement un regain manifeste, dont il est encore difficile de savoir s'il recouvre une forme nouvelle de fétichisme linguistique ou le développement d'une pédagogie rationnelle d'appropriation de la langue.
