    Tertuliano, un antiguo converso en lucha con los herejes gnósticos, es un hombre apasionado por la verdad. Para él, la verdad está en el origen, y la verdad del origen es transmitida por la tradición. Como cristiano, se interesa, pues, por la tradición de la Iglesia; en ella descubre diversos tramos: Dios, Cristo, Apóstoles, Iglesia. La apostolicidad (de origen y de doctrina) es la nota específica de su eclesiología. La tradición porta, como caudal, una doctrina, unas verdades, que se resumen en la llamada regla de fe. Integrada en esa doctrina (y sometida a ella) se encuentra la Escritura; los herejes la emplean abundantemente en la polémica, pero tras haberla manipulado e interpretado a su arbitrio; por eso, la mejor táctica frente a ellos es excluirlos de su uso probando que la Escritura no les pertenece.

Apostolicity (of origin and doctrine) is the specific note of its ecclesiology. Tradition carries, as a flow, a doctrine, some truths, which are summarized in the so-called rule of faith. Integrated in this doctrine (and subjected to it) is the Scripture; The heretics use it abundantly in the controversy, but after having manipulated the text and interpret it at its discretion; Therefore, the best tactic against them is to exclude them from their use by proving that Scripture does not belong to them.
