The College of Oviedo took advantage of the sainthood of Toribio de Mogrovejo to promote its own prestige. It used the image of the Virgin’s handing over of the collegiate sash to St. Toribio, to spread out this uncertain event in order to show the status of being a collegial. A second iconographic type, singled out by his attire, was propagated by it, on many occasions associating his representation with other two saints also members of Colleges, being these representations almost interchangeable. Particularly the festivities organized by the College in 1727 to celebrate his canonization, were very remarkable, for those the architect Alberto de Churriguera designed an enormous ephemeral altar.
