  • Richardson and Bachman share how they discovered the process of completing the square. The traditional teaching of this technique has centered on the mechanical manipulation of quadratic coefficients. The teaching is rarely connected to the historical development of the method and does not seek to cultivate inventive problem solvers through active reasoning and sense making. However, although this is the picture of traditional teaching of completing the square, there are also many calls for a richer exploration.
