this paper aims at reflecting upon the processes of legitimation and delegitimation of literary works from the Brazilian canon, paying attention particularly to the representation of black characters. Thus, at first, we approach the basis of formation and foundation of the literary canon, and, then, we analyze the representation of black people in some works published after the consolidation of the Brazilian romanticism (1836). From that period on, it can be observed that there is prejudice against the black, which justifies both their exclusion and their little importance in works considered canonical. Harold Bloom, Leyla PerroneMoisés, and Roberto Reis are the main authors who underscore the present research.

O propósito deste trabalho consiste em refletir sobre os processos de legitimação e de desligitimação de obras literárias do cânone brasileiro, atentando, principalmente, para a questão da representação do personagem negro. Assim, em um primeiro momento, realiza-se estudo sobre as bases de formação e de sustentação do cânone literário e, em seguida, projeta-se um olhar sobre o negro, em particular, em algumas obras publicadas a partir do romantismo (1836). Desde o momento em que a literatura brasileira volta o seu olhar sobre a cor local, observou-se que o negro foi representado de forma preconceituosa, o que justificou a sua exclusão ou o seu pouco valor em obras consideradas canônicas. Para o embasamento desta proposta, levaram-se em conta abordagens de autores como Harold Bloom, Leyla Perrone-Moisés e Roberto Reis, entre outros.
