    The psychoanalytic analysis of a literary text helps us to understand more deeply the universe of narrative, to examine the passional development of the characters as well as to define the relationships established among them. This article aims to reflect on the way the study of mourning and melancholia, described by Freud (2011), contributes to interpretate more deeply the short-story “The Third Bank of the River” by João Guimarães Rosa (2005). The metaphor of death and the way the characters (not) face it permeate throughout the whole text, and the states of mourning and melancholia emerge on the discourse. This analysis of Rosa’s short-story seeks to show how these states of being contribute to the construction of meaning effects in his literary text.

    A análise psicanalítica do texto literário ajuda a compreender mais profundamente o universo da narrativa, o desenvolvimento passional das personagens, bem como a definir as relações que se estabelecem entre elas. Este artigo tem como proposta refletir sobre a maneira como o estudo dos estados de luto e melancolia, descritos por Freud (2011) em obra homônima, contribui para a leitura do conto “A terceira margem do rio”, de João Guimarães Rosa (2005). A metáfora da morte e de seu (não) enfrentamento perpassa por todo o texto, e os estados de luto e melancolia a ela subjazem. A análise que segue procura mostrar em que medida esses estados de alma contribuem para a construção de sentido do conto roseano em apreço.
