  • Resumen
    • This essay puts forward the hypothesis that Oswald Ducrot’s theoretical model of polyphony, which is based on the principles of argumentation theory, is useful, too, for evaluating the adequate rendering of irony in translation. The analysis is based on Voltaire’s Candide and three German translations of this novel. It will be shown that the translator has to take into account the two »voices« by means of which irony is created (the locuteur on the one hand and the énonciateur on the other) as well as the subtle differences between these voices. Furthermore he must consider the contrast between the voice of the originator of the utterance (énonciateur), who is ironized, and the fictional world in this novel
