    ¿Existió alguna relación entre Hernán Cortés y La Rioja? En principio así debería colegirse de su casamiento con Juana de Zúñiga y Arellano, hija del V señor de los Cameros y II conde de Aguilar. Sin embargo, ni sus ajetreos en la corte ni los cronistas de la epopeya americana acreditan una vinculación personal. Y la misma consideración sería aplicable a su primogénito Martín, II marqués del Valle de Oaxaca, de no certificar L. Salazar y Castro el enlace con su prima Ana de Arellano en la villa de Nalda.

    Con este antecedente, y deseando aportar nuevos datos al universo cortesiano, ofreceremos testimonios de la presencia de don Martín en nuestra tierra. Una información preferentemente procesal que descubre las tribulaciones del joven marqués bajo la curaduría de su tío, y luego suegro, el IV conde de Aguilar Pedro Ramírez de Arellano. Contrariedades que parecen preludiar su turbulenta conjura en el virreinato novohispano y la subsiguiente confiscación de su fabuloso mayorazgo, amén de una dura prisión y el destierro definitivo en la metrópoli.

    Empero, para este propósito, es preciso escudriñar previamente la compleja relación familiar del conquistador de Nueva España, un aspecto poco conocido de su vibrante biografía.

    Was there any relationship between Hernan Cortes and La Rioja? We could deduce there was since he married Juana de Zuniga y Arellano, the daughter of the 5th Lord of Cameros and 2nd Count of Aguilar. However, neither his comings and goings at court, nor the chroniclers of his American adventure provide evidence of a personal relationship. The same could be stated of his first son, Martin, 2nd Marquis of Oaxaca Valley, were it not for his marriage to his cousin Ana de Arellano in the town of Nalda, as L. Salazar y Castro certifies.

    With this background in mind, and the wish to provide new data to the world of Cortes, we are offering new proofs of the presence of Martin in our region. This is mainly procedural information which unveils the troubles of the young marquis under the guardianship of his uncle and father-in-law to be, the 4th Count of Aguilar Pedro Ramirez de Arellano. Such problems herald his turbulent conspiracy in the New Spanish viceroyalty and the subsequent confiscation of his vast estate, as well as imprisonment and his definite exile in the metropolis.

    Nonetheless, for our purpose, it is necessary to examine, previously, the complex family relationship of the conqueror of the New Spain, a less known aspect of his vibrant biography.
