    La historia del beriberi es un ejemplo de orgullo nacional, diferencia de clases sociales, empeño investigador y también suerte. Y como toda historia, cuenta con sus protagonistas principales. Tal vez los más significativos fueron Christiaan Eijkman, William Fletcher y Kanehiro Takaki. Infección, toxicidad y alimentación, entre otros factores, fueron los puntos de partida para sustentar las bases etiopatogénicas de la enfermedad. El trabajo experimental y epidemiológico de estos autores dio con la clave de lo que causaba el beriberi y de su tratamiento efectivo. Al igual que pasara con el escorbuto, el misterio quedaba resuelto no sin un arduo trabajo y muchos errores previos.

    The history of beriberi is an example of national pride, different social classes, research efforts and also luck. All histories have their main protagonists. In this case, perhaps the most significant people were Christiaan Eijkman, William Fletcher and Kanehiro Takaki. Infection, toxicity and feeding, among other factors, were the starting points to support the initial etiopathogenic bases of the disease. The experimental and epidemiological work of these authors gave the key about the cause of beriberi and its effective treatment. As in the case of scurvy, the mystery was solved not without very hard work and many previous mistakes.
