This article aims to discuss the war memoirs discourse written by the then young intellectual António de Cértima. He was part of the Portuguese Military Corps in Mozambique and fought the German armed forces during the First World War, having written Epopeia Maldita during that period of time and thusly revealing a most remarkable literary way of writing. In this narrative of war, he connected his memories as a soldier with a critical analysis of the political-military options taken by the Portuguese governments and with the vision of the Portuguese identity. He pointed out that the solution to the 1920’s Portuguese First Republic political regime’ crisis laid in the institutionalisation of a dictatorship, which ought to be backed by the Armed Forces.

O objectivo deste artigo é problematizar o discurso memorialístico de guerra construído pelo jovem intelectual António de Cértima. Fez parte do corpo militar português que, em Moçambique, combateu as forças militares alemãs, durante a Primeira Guerra Mundial. Escreveu o livro Epopeia Maldita sobre esse tempo de confronto militar, onde revelou uma notável escrita literária. Nesta narrativa de guerra articulou as suas memórias de combatente com a análise crítica das opções político-militares tomadas pelos governos portugueses e com a visão sobre a identidade portuguesa. Segundo ele, nos anos 20, a resposta a dar à crise do regime político da Primeira República Portuguesa devia institucionalizar uma Ditadura apoiada pelas Forças Armadas.
