  • Resumen
    • The National Garden of Athens is an area with particularly attractive features, a set characterized by its historic continuity. At first, during the regency of King Otto (1833-1862), this was the Royal garden. Ever since 1917 when they called it the National Garden - , it has been open for the public, connected with the history of the town and is now an inextricable part of the towns cultural and social life. It totally covers 123.500 m2. and it is delimited today by the most important landmarks of the towns centre.

Within the framework of national experience in matters of protecting and promoting the cultural heritage, the Municipality of Athens, an agent of which administrates the Garden, has been called to apply an integrated administration plan. The actions of the Municipality aim at improving the area artistically and operationally while respecting its history. The priority is still given to preserve and bring out all the elements that represent the National Garden, within the framework of which some mild artistic and operational interventions have been made. At the same time, the municipality tries to reintegrate the Garden in the social life of the city with modern operations that attract the citizens. In support of this policy it has been suggested to organize cultural itineraries, regular guided-tours, to create a centre for environmental training and information, as well as educational programs for children, actions that help us realize the respect we owe to nature and our cultural heritage.

In essence, this is a special challenge for the administrator of the Garden because they are called to show the gardens historic features and the acceptance of its values by the new generations.
