Resumen de Boccaccio, el Decamerón y la acuñación de un neologismo: la “novela” en el siglo XV

Se recuperan y analizan en este trabajo las primeras apariciones de la voz “novela” como denominadora de un nuevo modo narrativo. En el siglo XV, tanto la circulación de manuscritos del Decamerón de Boccaccio, como la lectura que muchos hombres de letras estaban haciendo de esta obra, supusieron un impulso crucial para que este término (usado principalmente como sinónimo de “novedad” hasta esa fecha) experimentase un signifi - cativo proceso de deslizamiento semántico.
La vacilación con la que se comienza a usar la palabra “novela” (relacionada con otros géneros narrativos como el cuento o el ejemplo) permanece en el siglo XVI, donde los autores aún no acaban de distinguir con precisión las diferentes categorías narrativas.

This article recovers and analyses the earliest appearances of the term “novel” as the name for a new narrative model. In the fi fteenth century, the circulation of manuscripts of Boccaccio’s The Decameron, and the reading that many scholars were making of it, gave a crucial boost to the understanding of the term, enabling the concept (hitherto used chiefl y as a synonym for “novelty”) to undergo a signifi cant semantic shift. The hesitation with which the word “novel” began to be used (related to other genres such as the short story or the example) lasted well into the sixteenth century, when authors still did not distinguish precisely between the different narrative categories.
