  This text proposes to identify the existing forms of assistance and social protection throughout the history of Brazil, especially the attention directed to the poor. Through a bibliographical review; it is proposed a theoretical, conceptual and legal analysis that seeks to know how the social needs of the individuals were met, by highlighting the provisions destined to the poor, which transited from the scope of aid and charity, in general through punctual and limited actions, to the statute of social rights, secured in our legislation, with its achievements, advances, limits and challenges. It is considered that such reflection is important in the sense of recognizing the most impactful forms of assistance and protection that were part of our history and the role of the State in this relationship.

  Este texto propõe identificar as formas de assistência e proteção social existentes ao longo da história do Brasil, sobretudo a atenção destinada aos pobres. Por meio de uma revisão bibliográfica, propõe-se uma análise teórica, conceitual e legal que busca conhecer como as necessidades sociais dos indivíduos eram atendidas, com destaque as provisões destinadas aos pobres, as quais transitaram desde o escopo de ajuda e caridade, em geral por meio de ações pontuais e limitadas, até o estatuto dos direitos sociais, afiançado em nossas legislações, com suas conquistas, avanços, limites e desafios. Considera-se que tal reflexão é importante no sentido de reconhecer as formas mais impactantes de assistência e proteção que fizeram parte de nossa história e o papel do Estado nessa relação.
