La finalité des inscriptions figurant dans l'art roman n'est pas claire car il est rare qu'elles apportent des éléments neufs par rapport à l'image qu'elles accompagnent. De l'étude d'un groupe homogène — celui des monstres accompagnés d'inscriptions identificatrices — , il ressort notamment qu'il n'existe aucune constante au niveau du support, de la situation et du soin apporté à la calligraphie. Il appert d'autre part que, dans ce cas précis du moins, l'inscription nominale s'apparente davantage au signe catégoriel qu'à la légende identificatrice au sens strict. Le caractère redondant et à la limite gratuit de ce type d'inscription explique manifestement son caractère exceptionnel.

The purpose of the inscriptions that figure in the romanesque art is not obvious because they scarcely add any new elements to the picture itself. The study of a homogeneous group — the pictures of monsters with identifying inscriptions — teaches specifically that their support is as changeable as their situation and their appearance. It informs besides — as far as monsters are concerned — that the inscription has something more in common with a categorial sign than with an identifying legend stricto sensu. The redundant and, to some extent, gratuitous nature of this type of inscription obviously explains its exceptional nature.
