    Ferrerías y machucos son procedimientos para la obtención del hierro (ferrerías) y su posterior transformación en útiles domésticos o de trabajo (machucos), utilizados por la siderurgia tradicional durante los siglos XV al XIX. Esta es la cronología del trabajo que abordamos en el artículo sobre dicha actividad en el Noroeste de España (Galicia, Asturias y León). Tras describir la tecnología, estudiamos las condiciones geográficas (aguas, bosques y minas de hierro) y humanas (propietarios, arrendatarios, ferrones vascos) que permitieron que las 131 ferrerías y 80 machucos, convirtieran esta zona en una de las más activas productoras y comercializadoras de hierro de España.

    Finery forges and blacksmiths' are two procedures to obtain iron (finery forges) and to subsequently convert it into domestic and work utensils (blacksmiths’) used in the traditional ferrous metallurgy from the 15th to the 19th century. This is the chronology of the work addressed in this article about this activity in the northwest of Spain (Galicia, Asturias, and León). After describing the technology, we study the geographical (water, forest and iron mines) and human conditions (owners, tenants and Basque smiths) that enable the 131 finery forges and the 80 blacksmiths' to transform this area into one of the most active in the production and commercialisation of iron in Spain.
