    L’articolo riprende la formula ecclesia societas perfecta inæqualis che, arbitrariamente usata negli ultimi due secoli come definizione assoluta della Chiesa e successivamente altrettanto arbitrariamente accantonata, è oggi rivalutata. Essa non esprime tutta la realtà del mistero della Chiesa e pertanto non la si può assumere come definizione esaustiva della comunità ecclesiale. Conserva però la sua verità parziale, il suo valore entro il suo limite, ossia in quanto espressione della realtà storicamente sociale della Chiesa e della sua indipendenza dalla società civile e politica.

    The article takes the formula ecclesia societas perfecta inaequalis that, ar-bitrarily used in the last two centuries as an absolute definition of the Church and then just as arbitrarily set aside, is now re-evaluated. It does not express the whole reality of the mystery of the Church and therefore it cannot be tak-en as exhaustive definition of the eccle-sial community. However, it retains its partial truth, its value within its limit, which is as an expression of the histori-cally social reality of the Church and of its independence from civil and politic society.
