This article investigates how the democratic ethos is constructed in Rawls’ political liberalism. It begins with a description of the phenomenon of pluralism as the biggest challenge that our democracies must face. Secondly, it outlines the role that constitutions and the constitutional consensus have in the construction of that ethos and how, starting from political values, it is built as a just social background through overlapping consensus. Finally, the article opens perspectives on a phenomenological re-reading of the political conception of justice.
