    Among the forms of institutionalized protection of Cultural Heritage in Brazil, there are the most well-known and used instruments that grant a safeguard to the material, natural and immaterial cultural patrimony. In the present article we have chosen some mechanisms of protection provided by law, we seek to understand their functioning in public policies, as well as their applicability. We chose to elect the city of Ouro Preto, in the state of Minas Gerais, as an example of the implementation of these protection policies and the recent involvement of the population in decision-making involving cultural heritage.

    Dentre as formas de proteção institucionalizadas do Patrimônio Cultural no Brasil, estão os mais conhecidos e utilizados instrumentos que conferem salvaguarda ao patrimônio cultural material, natural e imaterial. No presente artigo elegemos alguns mecanismos de proteção previstos em lei, buscamos compreender seu funcionamento nas políticas públicas, assim como suas aplicabilidades. Optamos por eleger a cidade de Ouro Preto, no estado de Minas Gerais, como exemplo da execução dessas políticas de proteção e do recente envolvimento da população nas tomadas de decisões envolvendo o patrimônio cultural. Palavras-chave: Patrimônio cultural, Brasil, Instrumentos de proteção, Ouro Preto.
