  La Articulación Temporomandibular (ATM) es una articulación sinovial, formada por un componente articular, uno neuromúscular e influida por el factor oclusal y periodoncio. La Disfunción Temporomandibular (DTM), presenta formas clínicas variadas, referidas a los músculos masticatorios, o a sus componentes articulares. Dado que la ATM forma parte del sistema estomatognático (SEG), su alteración puede influir negativamente sobre algunas de las funciones del mismo. El trabajo que se presenta, recopila información y describe la influencia del ATM en la función masticatoria, en tanto que ésta es la más afectada por la DTM, presentándose en ella pérdida en la fuerza de mordida, disminución en la eficiencia y rendimiento masticatorio, alteración de la relación oclusal y en consecuencia conducir a un predominio masticatorio unilateral; a su vez, la pérdida de masticación puede llevar a una artrosis de la ATM y a un imbalance muscular orofacial (IMOF).Las funciones orales, son el objeto de trabajo del especialista en terapia miofuncional y disfagia, y cualquier factor que las afecte, como la DTM, debe ser motivo de su atención y estudio. Así, el contar con conocimientos suficientes entorno a la misma, le permitirá identificar y manejar apropiadamente el trastorno dentro de un equipo interdisciplinario.

  The TMJ is a sinovial joint, form by a articular component, a neuromuscular, afected by the occlusal and periodoncy factor. The temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD), it presents variated clinic forms, referee to the masticatory muscles, or to their articulary components. Because of the TMJ is part of the stomatognathic system (SGS), it’s alteration may have influence in a negative way over some of the functions of this. This study summarize the information and describes this influence in the masticatory function, because it is the most affected by the TMD, presenting lose in the bite strength, reduce in the masticatory efficiency and performance, alteration in the normal occlusion, and may take to a unilateral masticatory prevalence; also, the lost in the mastication may take to an arthrosis of the TMJ and also developing, a oro facial muscle imbalance (OFMI). The oral functions are the object of work of the specialist in myofunctional therapy and dysphagia, and any factor that may affect them, like TMD, must be the cause of it’s attention and study; this way, to have the enough knowledge about TMD will permit identify it and manage it properly inside an interdisciplinary team.
