Corn is the most widely grown grain in Ecuador and its growth is strongly influenced by the timing of precipitation and evapotranspiration. The aim of the study was to determine the impact that these two components produced in corn within the water balance in Lodana (Santa Ana-Manabí) from 2007 to 2011 in twelve possible production periods. In the area, the beginning of the rainy season occurs when precipitation exceeds 1 mm day -1 (December to May). Thus, the period of greatest ET maíz corresponds to the period from August 1 st to December 3 rd with 445.1 mm, while the opposite occurs between December 1 st until April 4 th 326 mm. These results show an important need for irrigation equivalent to 358.8 mm mainly in the period from September 1 to January 3 of which 201.3 mm are needed to meet the stage of increased water consumption.
