    The Battle of the Three Kings was a major event of global proportions, as the overwhelming Portuguese defeat had international political and cultural results, in North Africa and Europe. The Muslim victory firmly established the power of the Sa’adian dynasty in Morocco whose sultans gained unparalleled international recognition and prestige, and led to the conquest of vast territories of the Songhay Empire to the south. In Portugal, the loss of the king triggered a military invasion that brought the union of the Iberian Peninsula under Spanish rule. The events that led to Alcácer Quibir had been one of the most written subjects of Portuguese culture, with the polemic personality of the Portuguese King still prevailing on almost every study. As this is probably the most documented single battle of the Portuguese sixteenth century, a renewed historical analysis – more documented-based than driven by passion – is, certainly, still an utmost need.

    Poucas vezes um a batalha teve um impacto tão determinante como Alcácer Quibir. A derrota dos portugueses trouxe a breve trecho a anexação espanhola que redesenhou o mapa da Europa. Do lado islâmico, a dinastia Sádida consolidou o seu domínio do norte de África e iniciou um notável período de afirmação, tanto no continente africano como em relação aos reinos europeus. Talvez por estas razões a historiografia contemporânea venha a renovar o interesse pela época sebástica. Contudo, esta tremenda derrota continua ancorada numa abordagem demasiado focada na personalidade do rei português, mau grado a publicação de documentação coeva fundamental que ainda carece de estudos aprofundados.
