  • Resumen
    • Over the centuries, images of dentists at work, removing teeth, have had comedic implications and also struck terror into the minds of observers. Because of the shock value and attention-getting power of such images, some Victorian Era merchants who advertised using trade cards, placed their printed messages on stock cards that featured tooth extractions. While some custom cards were designed to advertise dentists or dental parlors or products, such as PIKE'S TOOTHACHE DROPS (Figure 1) or DENTAL SNUFF (Figure 2), oftentimes the product or service was unrelated to dentistry. The tooth extraction image in every case was undoubtedly chosen chiefly for its ability to vividly attract interest in the message being advertised on the card. The cards pictured here typify "tooth-pulling cards" of the era.
