The coincidental discovery and subsequent excavation of anthropological remains on the incline of a crossroads between vineyard plots, in the town of Laguardia in La Rioja Alavesa (Cuatro Encinas de Vallobera region) prompted the exhumation of an almost complete skeleton pertaining to an adult male, buried in a simple and apparently isolated grave. Alongside the bone remains, 15 bronze buttons of two different types were also recovered, along with a minuscule fragment of mineralised fabric at the height of the pelvis, and remains of leather and footwear studs in contact with the bones of the feet, clear indications that the individual in question was buried with his clothes still on. The buttons indicate that the man was a possible combatant, either military or civilian, who died either during the War of the Pyrenees (1793-1785) or, more likely, during the Peninsular War (1808-1813).
