  • Fujairah Port gives the UAE a real strategic edge. Given the pipelines leading from the oil and gas fields of Abu Dhabi to Fujairah Emirate, Fujairah Port is now the world's second largest bunkering port (behind Singapore) with 700,000-800,000 barrels of oil flowing from Abu Dhabi daily-and this is only at half capacity. The importance of this port is increased if traffic through the straits is choked for any reason.

    For example, [Khalifa] is Abu Dhabi's main port and handles the Emirate's container traffic and general cargo. In its present development phase one, the port manages a capacity of 2.5m TEU containers and 12m tonnes of general cargo. Once all five development phases are completed in 2030, Khalifa Port is expected to handle 15m TEU containers and 35m tonnes of general cargo.

    "There's a huge investment that you have to put into ports to stay competitive. It's not just about the size of cranes or the size of the ports and the quay walls, there's now the new technology of semi-automation that we have already invested in. Even that is growing on a very fast track," he said.
