Outside China, magnesia and refractories producers continued to pursue vertical integration strategies in order to secure future magnesia supply, in particular for fused magnesia (FM) and dead burned magnesia (DBM).
Also in Greece, Terna Mag SA shipped its first magnesite order to Italy in February. The shipment of 2,500 tonnes magnesite was part of its broader EUR 100m ($124.5m) investment plan to revive mining activities in Mantoudi region, Greece. The company said it expects to produce 450,000 tpa magnesia in 2018, of which 100,000 tpa will be CCM and 35,000 tpa DBM.
China's export prices for magnesia were lower in 2014 compared with 2013. The DBM average price was Chinese renminbi (Rmb) 750/tonne ($121.5/tonne) in H1 2014, down 5% y-o-y.
