D. Duarte (1433-1438) reigned only five years, but he left an important legacy: the expansion of literacy in Portugal. That was one of the strategies of the Avis Dinasty to to legitimize his court and his lineage as those that would make the kingdom grow in economic, political and cultural importance. In this sense, the spread of the translations was one of the instruments used for the books reached a larger number of people, especially the nobles. This article pretends to show the beginning of the vernacular in Medieval Portugal, focusing mainly on the king D. Duarte, one of the supporters of the production and custody of books in the period, demonstrating the importance of these Works for the consolidation of a new nobility who came to power.

D. Duarte (1433-1438) reinou apenas cinco anos, mas deixou um importante legado: a ampliação da cultura letrada em Portugal. Esta foi uma das estratégias da Dinastia de Avis para legitimar sua corte e sua linhagem como aqueles que fariam o reino crescer em importância econômica, política e cultural. Neste sentido, a propagação das traduções foi um dos instrumentos utilizados para que as obras escritas alcançassem um número maior de pessoas, notadamente os nobres. Este artigo pretende apontar o início da língua vulgar em Portugal Medieval focando, principalmente, no rei D. Duarte, um dos grandes incentivadores da produção e guarda de livros no período, demonstrando a importância dessas obras para a consolidação de uma nova nobreza que ascendeu ao poder.
