Kamen Nechev, chief technology officer at Saft, argued that growth in [Li]-ion demand would be largely driven by growth in the industrial sector (including in electric vehicles (EV) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEV)) due to the performance advantages of Li-ion.
The importance of raw material costs were firmly cast in the spotlight by battery manufacturers at the conference and trade fair, as well as the prohibitive cost of R&D into Li-ion batteries.
As well as raw material costs, R&D is also proving a major cost for battery producers, with companies like Saft having to use the income from other types of batteries to subsidise Li-ion developments.
