  • Tesla's EVs run on rechargeable lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries, of which the principal mineral components are graphite, lithium and cobalt.

    The exact composition of Tesla's battery chemistry, which is manufactured by Japan's Panasonic Corp., has not been disclosed, but according to 2012 calculations from Roskill Information Service, each 1kWh of Li-ion battery contains 1.2-1.6kg graphite and 0.6-0.8kg lithium. The cobalt content is likely to be around 0.1-0.2kg/1kWh, based on other estimates.

    "The cathode and anode materials themselves are next generation, so we're (...) seeing improvements in the maybe 10% to 15% range on the chemistry itself," JB Straubel, Tesla's chief technology officer, added.
