  • Resumen
    • "The EU is facing two main challenges, which are crucial for a strong EU industrial base as an essential building block of the EU's growth and competitiveness," the Horizon 2020 website states.

"It's a sensitive issue," one MagMin participant said. "If we're not careful, we'll see most of Turkey's magnesite heading to China and could be caught short [in Europe]," they added.

The EC also assessed the extent of the EU's dependence on single or very few non-EU sources for supplies of these minerals. For example, the main sources of borates imports into the EU in 2012 were Turkey (98% of natural borates imports to the EU and 86% of refined borates), US (6%), Peru (6%, refined borates) and Argentina (2%, natural borates).
