Resumen de Ensayo y duda escéptica. Sobre el origen del ensayo en la modernidad temprana

Resumen: Habitualmente suele decirse de Michel de Montaigne que habría sido el primer autor moderno dedicado a componer ensayos, y éste es, sin duda, el género contemporáneo por excelencia en filosofía (olvidados ya los diálogos, epístolas o tratados del pasado). Pero su carácter pionero en este sentido no se acompaña del mismo aprecio por lo que respecta al contenido de su obra. Y es que, también usualmente se entiende que Montaigne habría sido un mero popularizador del escepticismo antiguo, recuperado en el Renacimiento, sin aportes significativos o una filosofía propia. Es el propósito de este artículo mostrar el relevante papel de Montaigne, no sólo en la recuperación y difusión del escepticismo en la Modernidad, sino también en su configuración. En este sentido, los aportes del pensador francés habrían sido plenamente relevantes y su figura como filósofo merecería una reconsideración y rehabilitación.

Abstract: People usually consider Michel de Montaigne to be the first modern author dedicated to writing essays, and this is, without doubt, the contemporary genre par excellence in philosophy (dialogues, epistles or treaties of the past having been forgotten). Nevertheless, his pioneering character in this sense is not accompanied by the same appreciation with regard to the content of his work. People usually say too that Montaigne was a mere transmitter of Ancient Scepticism, recovered during the Renaissance, without significant contributions or his own philosophy. It is the purpose of this article to show the relevant role of Montaigne, not only in the recuperation and transmission of scepticism in Modernity, but also in its configuration. In this respect, the contributions of the French thinker become fully relevant and render him a philosopher who deserves to be reconsidered.
