Art et activisme à la fin du xxe siècle (“What AIDS Has Done to Me. Art and Activism at the End of the 20th Century”) — the latest magnum opus by the art historian and art critic Élisabeth Lebovici assesses what AIDS has done to beings, images and the very practice of criticism and art history. Thirty years after the publication of the seminal issue of October (AIDS: Cultural Analysis/Cultural Activism edited by Douglas Crimp), and focusing on the cultural implications of the AIDS epidemic and the political uses of its representations, this “moral” and activist history written in the first person is indeed the story of a major upheaval, both personal and collective. Monographic and thematic essays and interviews revolve around the “AIDS years”, and – without claiming to be exhaustive – are always as close as possible to the heart of everything that mattered to the author.
