Les origines d'Odon de Cluny

    What are the family origins of the great abbot of Cluny (928-942), Odo ? Was he a Frank ? Did he corne from Aquitaine or Le Mans ? The answer is still in debate, and the issue is of some interest, as it should help to understand the carreer and action of the promoter of the great burgundian abbey. A clunisian charter, probably misdated, gives a clue to the identity of Odo's mother, a landowner on the borders of Auvergne, Limousin and Quercy. And the father may well be Abbo, a prominent Limousin character, versed in roman law, and a member of the set around duke William of Aquitaine. Anyway, if Odo's family is Frankish, it doubtless belongs to the category of the romanophile aristocrats, settled in the South and immerged in its culture, like the famous Géraud d'Aurillac — whose life was precisely written by Odo.

    D'où venait Odon, abbé de Cluny de 927 à 942 ? : était-il franc, aquitain ou manceau ? la discussion n'est ni récente ni close, et la question n'est pas sans intérêt pour mieux comprendre la carrière et l'action du promoteur de la grande abbaye bourguignonne au Xe s. Une charte clunisienne, sans doute mal datée, nous donne peut-être l'identité de la mère d'Odon, une matrone possessionnée aux confins de l'Auvergne, du Limousin et du Quercy. Quant au père, ne serait-ce pas cet Abbon, grand personnage limousin versé en droit romain, de l'entourage du duc Guillaume d'Aquitaine ? De toute façon, si la famille d'Odon est franque, il s'agit, à n'en pas douter, de cette catégorie d'aristocrates francs philo-romans, implantés et acculturés au Midi, à l'instar du fameux Géraud d'Aurillac ... dont la Vie est écrite précisément par Odon.
