El estudio de la infl uencia de la interacción de distintos iones con las macromoléculas puede considerarse en un terreno a medio camino entre la Química Orgánica e Inorgánica. Tal vez por esta razón sea difícil encontrar introducciones a la fenomenología tanto en manuales de la una como de la otra. A más de un siglo después de la publicación por Leweit y Hofmeister del primer estudio sistemático de la acción de distintas sales sobre disoluciones proteicas, aun hoy la fenomenología sigue sin ser completamente comprendida. Este artículo es una introducción a las series liotrópicas, las aproximaciones existentes para su explicación y a algunas de sus implicaciones fundamentales.

The study of the infl uence of the interaction between ions and macromolecules could be considered in a halfway from the Organic Chemistry and Inorganic Chemistry. That might be the reason why it is diffi cult to fi nd introductions to the phenomenology in manuals of either fi eld. After more than a century after the publication by Leweit and Hofmeister of the fi rst systematic study of the infl uence of different salts on proteins solutions, the phenomenology is still not completely understood. This article is an introduction to the effects of the lyotropic series, the existence approximations to explain them and some of their fundamental implications.
