  • Resumen
    • The essay introduces the reader to thirteenth-century horizontal tree diagrams representing the structure of scholastic questions. Analysis of diagrams in two manuscripts from the early Franciscan school of Paris is enriched with notions from cognitive studies, in order to use these drawings as a lens into scholastic cognitive strategies and perception of texts. While previous scholarship about medieval diagrams has focused on mnemonic and pedagogical functions, I argue that these drawings were used as road maps and as editing tools for both navigating and constructing the increasingly sophisticated forms of scholastic writing. This application of the diagrammatic mode to text structure, I suggest, both reflected and encouraged a new perception of texts as modular, spatial, and hierarchical entities.
