This essay delves into the role of ancient prophecy in visual representations of Christian Annunciations from the medieval and humanistic age. The theme of the Annunciation offers a fine example of how art may draw its social aptitude from the structure that typifies language. Such a link becomes apparent in numerous works belonging to the pictorial tradition and in strongly prophetic humanistic texts.

Il saggio si propone di indagare il ruolo della profezia antica nell’orditura iconografica delle Annunciazioni cristiane di età medioevale ed umanistica. L’Annunciazione viene a costituire il terreno privilegiato per mostrare come l’arte possa mutuare la propria capacità socializzatrice dalla struttura propria del linguaggio. Tale interconnessione è mostrata esemplarmente in molti dipinti della tradizione pittorica e nei testi di matrice umanistica a forte richiamo profetico.
