By embodying the period of questioning brought about by destalinization, the journal Arguments represented an important parenthesis in the history of an usually closed French intellectual field. The forrn of Arguments as much as its content gave it most of its significance. Its friendly, convivial and open character provided thé existential opening corresponding to its theoretical opening based on the refusal of dogmatism and pursued as the search for a free and open heuristic and politics. Having reached an intellectual ethic, but without a Consolidated theory or politics, Arguments closed its own parenthesis by dissolving itself when it recognized that the time for questions had ended.

En incarnant la période de remise en cause née de la déstalinisation, la revue Arguments a constitué une parenthèse importante dans l'histoire d'un champ intellectuel français la plupart du temps cloisonné. Autant que son contenu, c'est la forme d'Arguments qui lui confère l'essentiel de sa signification. Son caractère amical, convivial, ouvert est l'ouverture existentielle correspondant à l'ouverture théorique, déclenchée par le refus du dogmatisme, et poursuivie dans la recherche d'une heuristique et d'une politique libres et ouvertes. Parvenu à une éthique de l'intellectuel, mais sans théorie ni politique consolidées, Arguments, constatant que la période des questions était passée, ferma la parenthèse par une auto-dissolution.
