El artículo pretende poner de manifiesto cómo el Papa Sarto tomó posición clara en favor de utilizar la moderna técnica legislativa estatal de la codificación, pero puesta al servicio, no de llevar a cabo una reforma profunda del Derecho canónico, sino de recoger en un cuerpo legal manejable y en formulaciones claras y sintéticas, las leyes canónicas recibidas del pasado. La bibliografía reciente suele reconocer el papel central del Papa Sarto en su realización, que lo veía como el coronamiento de todas sus numerosas reformas en el seno de la Iglesia. Para poder sopesar el alcance histórico de la primera codificación, se pasa reseña a las colecciones canónicas anteriores.
This article aims to show how Pope Sarto took a clear position in favor of using the modern state legis-lative technique of codification, not to carry out a serious reform of canon law, but rather to collect the canonical laws received from the past in a manageable legal body and in clear and synthetic for-mulations. The recent bibliography usu-ally recognizes the central role of Pope Sarto in this accomplishment, which he saw as the crowning of his many re-forms in the heart of the Church. In or-der to be better comprehend the histori-cal scope of the first codification, there is a review of the previous canonical collections.
