This article presents research information on the alteration of the NMDA receptor in laboratory mice. The NMDA receptor is a protein complex found in the membranes of postsynaptic neurons and early research suggested it led to enhanced synaptic efficacy which improved memory. Mice without the receptors showed profound memory deficits. By boosting the production of the NMDA subunit known as NR38, a smarter mouse was created with increased memory retention.
