The article reports on a portable firewall designed to protect privacy by preventing tracking by radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags. RFID tags use built-in antennas and can be powered by tag readers or onboard batteries. Ari Juels, chief scientist at RSA Laboratories, proposed the creation of tags that prevent readers from recognizing them. Melanie Rieback, a scientist at the Free University in Amsterdam, developed the RFID Guardian with her colleagues to selectively jam RFID readers.
