  • The article discusses whether premium gasoline is more efficient for automobiles. Gasoline is formed from hydrocarbon molecules, including octane. The octane rating is a measure comparing the gasoline with a mixture of octane and heptane. Premium gasoline resists knocks, uncontrolled explosions in internal combustion engines set off by compression of the fuel and air mixture. Most automobiles offer a low compression ratio to prevent knocks. Ethanol may provide a higher octane rating.
