This article explores the use of nuclear power, a carbon-free alternative to fossil fuels currently in use to produce power. Global electricity consumption is projected to increase 160% by 2050 and currently nuclear power only supplies a sixth of the world's energy. Building many more nuclear power plants, the article claims, will help meet those needs without large new emissions of carbon dioxide. While newer plants are safer and more reliable, such a scenario requires economical new plants, a plan for waste storage and prevention of nuclear weapons proliferation.
