This article focuses on the possible therapeutic applications of the hallucinogen psilocybin, the active compound in psychedelic mushrooms. In an experiment, scientists at Johns Hopkins University selected 36 spiritually active volunteers to take a controlled amount of the drug. One third of the volunteers given psilocybin described it as the most spiritually meaningful experience of their lives; 79% reported a moderate to great increase in their well-being or life satisfaction two months later.
