  • This article looks at hydrogen fuel-cell technology as an alternative to the use of crude oil, which contributes major amounts of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. The use of hydrogen is ideal because its only waste product is water. Before hydrogen fuel-cell cars can become commercially feasible, automakers must develope safe, inexpensive, durable models that can travel long distances before refueling. Energy companies could produce large amounts of hydrogen at prices competitive with gasoline, but building the infrastructure of distribution will be costly.
