The article reports that a stand of the nearly vanquished American chestnut tree was found outside of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Little White House in the southern Appalachians. The American chestnut was all but destroyed by the mid-1950s by an imported fungus. The American Chestnut Foundation will breed the trees with the blight-resistant Chinese chestnut to create a heartier species.
