  • This article discusses research by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN), published in the October 10, 2008 issue of "Science," into the threat of extinction faced by more than 1000 mammal species. The declining habitats of elephants in Asia and the vaquita porpoise in the Gulf of California on the Mexican coast are described. Issues relating to deforestation and hunting as causes of declining mammal populations are noted.
