The article describes Japanese scientist Shinya Yamanaka's research with embryonic stem cells in mice. Yamanaka research focused on inducing an embryonic-like state in other cells. In 2007 induced pluripotent state cells (iPS cells) were also obtained with human cells. However, these human iPS cells are not being used by clinical investigators because of several safety issues: the risk of turning into cancer tumors and the use of retroviruses in the process of delivering the genes to the cells.
