This article discusses research, published in the November, 2008 issue of "American Naturalist," into sacrificial behavior among the Brazilian ant species Forelius pusillus. In the evening Forelius fill in the entrances to their colonies, and a small portion of the population remains outside to fill in the entrances. These ants are left outside, and many of them die.
